The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to purchase or use Celebrex (celecoxib) because of concerns about potential gastrointestinal side effects, such as stomach bleeding and ulcers, and allergic reactions.
The Food and Drug Administration’s warning labels do not say the drug is safe for use in people with heart disease, a new safety analysis by the San Antonio Gastroenteroma/Hematology Association revealed.
The results showed that the drug can lead to serious stomach bleeding, ulcers, and bleeding in people who take it. Celebrex, a COX-2 inhibitor, was associated with this serious bleeding risk in two separate studies.
The FDA has not approved Celebrex for use in people with heart disease. It is the only COX-2 inhibitor approved for this use.
People with a history of heart attack or stroke should avoid taking the drug because of the risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding.
The new safety analysis found the drug can increase the risk of stomach ulcers and stomach bleeding. People who take the drug for heart problems should also talk to their doctor before taking the drug.

Celebrex (ibuprofen) is a medication approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat chronic pain and inflammation. It works by inhibiting production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals released in response to injury or inflammation. In the case of chronic pain, the production of prostaglandins is decreased. As a result, the pain may be less intense and the pain may be less severe. Celebrex is available in several forms, including tablets, capsules, creams, patches, and injections. The most common brand names for Celebrex are ibuprofen, which is sold under the brand name Aleve, and diclofenac, which is sold under the brand name Diclofenac. Other brand names for Celebrex include Advil, Motrin, and Motrin IB. Celebrex may also be called other brand names for other pain relievers such as Celebrex, Celecoxib, Aleve, and Vibramycin. The recommended starting dose of Celebrex for adults is 200 mg. Dosages greater than 200 mg may be used to relieve chronic pain and inflammation. It is also available as an oral tablet, a topical gel, a cream, or a nasal spray. Celebrex should not be used in the treatment of arthritis.

Before taking Celebrex, tell your healthcare provider about any existing heart, liver, kidney, or lung problems, as this medication may worsen these problems. Inform your healthcare provider if you have recently had heart surgery, or if you have a history of heart attacks or stroke that have not responded to other drugs, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your healthcare provider should also monitor you carefully for any bleeding or bruising while you are taking Celebrex. If you have ever had a stomach ulcer, or any of the gastrointestinal disorders mentioned above, tell your healthcare provider about Celebrex. These conditions may be caused by the drug, and they may be treated with Celebrex. It is not known if Celebrex will cause or worsen stomach bleeding, bleeding from the stomach ulcer, or if it can cause you to bleed, even if your stomach has been bleeding for several days. Tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had a blood clot in your legs or in your chest. This is not a complete list of all side effects of Celebrex. If you have, or have had, a stomach ulcer, or bleeding from the stomach, tell your healthcare provider right away. Some people may also experience allergic reactions to Celebrex, and they may need to stop taking Celebrex or call their healthcare provider right away.
